Happy Birthday Google gets 13

Happy birthday, Google. Today, the search engine turns 13. In keeping with tradition, Google has posted a birthday Doodle. This year’s logo is a throwback to the early 2000s, when Google’s logo emulated Yahoo in adding an exclamation point.

The exact date of Google’s birthday has changed and been debated a bit through the years. Google filed for incorporation on September 4, 1998, was established three days later on September 7, and the Google.com domain was registered September 15. All have been considered Google’s “birthday” at one point, but Google has officially chosen September 27 as their day.

Search Engine Watch has covered Google since Day 1 – whatever day you choose that to be. Search Engine Watch provided one of the earliest reviews of Google in August 1998, at which time then Ph.D. student and future Google CEO Larry Page said his goal was to “build a service where the priority is on giving users great results.”

As for Doodles, the special logos have been around since Aug. 30, 1998. The first Doodle was created when Page and Sergey Brin attended the Burning Man festival. The first Google Doodle celebrating their birthday appeared on Sept. 27, 2002, for their fourth birthday.

Google Launches Google+ (Google Plus) To Battle Facebook [PICS]

Google has finally unveiled Google+, the company’s top secret social layer that turns all of the search engine into one giant social network.

Google Plus

Google Plus

Google+, which begins rolling out a very limited field test on Tuesday, is the culmination of a year-long project led by Vic Gundotra, Google’s senior vice president of social. The project, which has been delayedseveral times, constitutes Google’s answer to Facebook.

The search giant’s new social project will be omnipresent on its products, thanks to a complete redesign of the navigation bar. The familiar gray strip at the top of every Google page will turn black, and come with several new options for accessing your Google+ profile, viewing notifications and instantly sharing content. The notification system is similar to how Facebook handles notifications, complete with a red number that increases with each additional notice.

Page Speed for Chrome, and in 40 languages!

Today we’re launching the most requested feature for Page Speed, Page Speed for Chrome. Now Google Chrome users can get Page Speed performance suggestions to make their sites faster, right inside the Chrome browser. We would like to thank all our users for your great feedback and support since we launched. We’re humbled that 1.4 M unique users are using the Page Speed extension and finding it useful to help with their web performance diagnosis.

Google Chrome support has always been high on our priority list but we wanted to get it right. It was critical that the same engine that powers the Page Speed Add-On for Firefox be used here as well. So we first built the Page Speed SDK, which we then integrated into the Chrome extension.

Page Speed for Chrome retains the same core features as the Firefox add-on. In addition, there are two major improvements appearing in this version first. We’ve improved scoring and suggestion ordering to help web developers focus on higher-potential optimizations first. Plus, because making the web faster is a global initiative, Page Speed now supports displaying localized rule results in 40 languages! These improvements are part of the Page Speed SDK, so they will also appear in the next release of our Firefox add-on as well.

If your site serves different content based on the browser’s user agent, you now have a good method for page performance analysis as seen by different browsers, with Page Speed coverage for Firefox and Chrome through the extensions, and Internet Explorer via webpagetest.org, which integrates the Page Speed SDK.

We’d love to hear from you, as always. Please try Page Speed for Chrome, and give us feedback on our mailing list about additional functionality you’d like to see. Stay tuned for updates to Page Speed for Chrome that take advantage of exciting new technologies such as Native Client.

Google Place Search Promotion

Google will take another swing at the Yellow Pages today, integrating local business listings directly into search results.

The company is set to launch Google Place Search as a standalone search option, much the same way Google users can search for images, news, or products. It will bring the Google Places listings that business owners can claim into the main search results pages, rather than confining them to searches done within Google Maps as was the case prior to today.

Google has been encouraging local restaurants, hardware stores, and dry cleaners to “claim” their business within Google by adding their Web site, telephone number, hours, and other relevant information to a form. That generates a listing for the place within Google Maps, and allows searchers and patrons of that business to leave reviews.

Now for regular Google searches like “sushi restaurants san francisco” (I know I use this example every time, but there are some really good ones) users will start to see a new search result that is sort of a combination of a traditional Google search result and a Google Maps search result, with a link to that location on Google Maps, reviews aggregated from around the Web, and a 1- to 5-star rating of that business. In addition, Google will put a direct link to that business’ “Place page,” which could be previously found by clicking “more information” on a Google Maps search.

The move highlights the Place pages much more prominently, which Google hopes will encourage more and more businesses to list their wares on Google before the company’s massive search audience. The special search results will appear when Google thinks it can predict your search query has local intent, but searchers can also force results pages of just Places listings by selecting “Places” from the left-hand navigation panel on a Google search results page.

The change should start rolling out over the course of the next few days around the world.

Microsoft adds App for Android OS

Microsoft has added one of its rare contributions to Android with word of Bing for Android. The search application closely mirrors the iPhone version and supports images, maps, movie Showtime and other specialties. It likewise uses spoken search for hands-free requests, even for complex searches such as flight schedules.

The app is free and available in Android Market but is currently restricted to Verizon phones. More networks are likely in the future but weren’t confirmed today.

Despite Microsoft’s clear competition with Google, it has said it plans to develop Android apps whenever cross-platform reach is important and earlier this year put out a Tag reader for Android. Bing on mobile has regardless been symbolic of Microsoft’s struggling Smartphone approach as the iPhone and now Android versions are occasionally more advanced than the Windows Mobile version. Bing will get its biggest help this fall when Windows Phone 7 ships with Bing searches as a core part of the OS.

Chrome Frame add-one for IE launched by Google

Google has launched an important revised version to its notorious Chrome Frame, an Internet Explorer plug-in that replaces the default IE rendering engine with the engine that powers Google’s Chrome browser.

Chrome Frame fundamentally embeds Google’s browser inside any tab or window within Internet Explorer. It forces IE to load a website using the same WebKit rendering engine as Google Chrome, complete with its enhanced JavaScript rendering and support for HTML5 technologies like embedded audio and video.

Previously only available as a “developer preview,” the new version of Chrome Frame has been updated to beta status. Chrome Frame’s underlying code has also been updated to match the Chrome 5 browser, which means Chrome Frame can now handle more HTML5 features like better audio and video playback, Canvas animations, geolocation, Web Workers, WebSocket connections and offline databases.

Chrome Frame now also integrates with IE more closely, meaning that the add-on now works with IE’s InPrivate browsing mode, and that clearing cookies and cache in IE will now also clear out the same elements in Chrome Frame.
If you’re stuck with IE 6 at work, but you want to see the latest and greatest the web has to offer, Chrome Frame makes for a decent solution. The only downside to Chrome Frame is that it will only be triggered on websites that have explicitly enabled it using a special Meta tag. Of course, all of Google’s sites are on that short list, so you can at least experience some cool cutting-edge stuff like drag-and-drop in Gmail, geolocation in Google Maps, or real-time communication in Google Wave.

Despite the fact that Chrome Frame does not just take over IE, Google’s add-on is not without some degree of controversy. Back when Chrome Frame was first announced, Mozilla’s vice president of engineering, Mike Shaver, warned against the idea, arguing that the Chrome plug-in for IE muddles the user’s understanding of browser security, and in the end will create more confusion and little benefit.

So far those fears haven’t come to pass, but now that Chrome Frame is a beta release, it may begin to see wider use.
Also, there’s a subset of users who need IE 6 for legacy corporate intranets and applications, but also need to interact with today’s web. Given that several Google services — like Google Apps and Google Reader — no longer support IE 6, the day is fast approaching where Chrome Frame will be the only option for those still locked into IE 6 who want to use the newest web apps.

Google has Brought New Image Vision For You

If there is one thing about Google that hasn’t changed much over the past few years, it might be its Image search results page. Yes, there were some UI changes, but nothing that could be termed a major redesign. That has changed now with Google rolling out its new Image results page that sports a fresher, more “modern” look.

While Google may be the most imitated technology firm out there, this time it seems to have taken a bit of inspiration from Microsoft’s Bing. The latter’s image results page is quite similar to the one you now see on Google. If that wasn’t all, Google also follows Bing’s way of doing away with multiple pages and presenting the results in a single page. While in Bing the results continue to “grow” as you scroll down, Google has made it slightly manual by adding a “Show more images” button  at the bottom of a page.

Google Images also gets thumbnail previews – a feature that it says would be useful for users on high resolution screens. It also has a “similar images” option when you hover the mouse pointer over a thumbnail. Once you click on an image, you’re taken to a new landing page that displays a large image in context, with the website it’s hosted on visible right behind it. Click anywhere outside the image, and you’re right in the original page where you can learn more about the source and context.

Apart from these changes, Google has also included new advertisement friendly features on Google Images. It has launched a new ad format called Image Search Ads. “These ads appear only on Google Images, and they let you include a thumbnail image alongside your lines of text.

If you cannot see the new Google Image search yet, you might want to wait for a while till it’s fully incorporated.
